Why switchboards get upgraded in Sale

Sale's older weatherboard homes around the CBD and along the Raymond, York and Foster Street spine were built before RCDs were mandatory. Many still have ceramic rewireable fuses — the ones with the fuse wire you have to re-thread when they blow — or early plug-in circuit breakers with no safety switch at all. A board like that gives you no protection against electric shock, and it cannot safely handle the loads a modern household puts on it: reverse-cycle air conditioning, an oven, a dryer, a home office, and increasingly an EV charger. The 1970s brick veneer homes in Guthridge and Sale North often have the first generation of plug-in RCDs, which age and fail over time.

A switchboard upgrade replaces the old fuses or breakers with modern RCBOs — combined circuit breaker and safety switch units — and a modern main switch. We check the consumer mains, the earth stake, and the safety switch operation, and we issue a Certificate of Electrical Safety for the work. For homes adding solar, a battery, or an EV charger, the board often needs upgrading first to make room for the new circuits and to meet current AusNet connection requirements.

Signs your board needs work

Call us if your switchboard is warm to the touch, has scorch marks or a burning smell, trips frequently, still uses ceramic fuses, has no RCD safety switch, or will not cope with a new appliance you want to add.
